The prices of petrol and diesel in December 2024 are much lower than a year ago but toll fees have increased slightly. Here is how much the average South African motorist can expect to pay on fuel and tolls this holiday.

The average South African motorist will pay much less on fuel and tolls to cover the most popular holiday highway routes in 2024 than they did last year.In December 2024, a litre of unleaded 95 petrol inland costs R21.47, compared with R23.25 in December 2023. The same reduction of R1.78 applies to the coastal price of this fuel.

Although instability in the Middle East caused a brief resurgence in the oil price in September 2024, the situation quickly de-escalated. As oil and petroleum are sold in US dollars, the rand’s exchange rate to that currency also influences local petrol prices. In this instance, we used the prices of 95 unleaded petrol inland for all routes starting from a non-coastal city, and the coastal price for the same fuel for those that started in Cape Town and Gqeberha .
