Behind the scenes, work to throw Europe’s biggest celebration of music has been going on for months 📍 Liverpool

The event, at St George’s Hall, marks the beginning ofof Eurovision 2023 and will also feature a live semi-final allocation draw, in which the 37 countries in the competition will find out their groups for the next stage of the competition. It will be broadcast live for the first time on British TV at 7pm on BBC Two.Liverpool won the bid to host the Song Contest in October, beating Glasgow.

“We’re just getting down to the final stages of our commissions,” says Clare McColgan, Director of Culture for Liverpool City Council. “We’ve been working with artists across the globe for the last two months to create big, gorgeous pieces of art that will be seen all over the city. It’s going to be a cultural festival.”

Mykola Chernotytskyi, head of Ukraine’s public service broadcaster, UA:PBC, says: “Eurovision fans and UK citizens know deeply about Ukrainian culture. Our culture is very different from Russia. Eurovision is a way for us to celebrate Ukraine.”“Sometimes Eurovision scandals are more important than political scandals,” laughs Chernotytskyi. “Just yesterday I walked past a Ukrainian flag hanging from St George’s Hall. I think it’s fantastic.”The whole city will be touched by Eurovision from April.

The BBC has its own plans. As well as broadcasting tonight’s live semi-final draw, hosted by Rylan and AJ Odudu, the two semi-finals will be live on BBC One . “160 million people watched Eurovision last year, the numbers are only going up,” says, Managing Director of BBC’s Eurovision coverage. “Our slogan is ‘united by music’. We hope that needs no explanation. Eurovision has always brought people together.

Before the Grand Final on 13 May, which will take place in Liverpool Arena, there will be nine dress rehearsals, six of which will be with an audience. At least 12,000 staff will be hired for the event and 1,200 members of the media will be in attendance. “We’re essentially turning the arena into a massive television studio,” says Green. “This is first and foremost a television programme, which allows us to celebrate what TV can do with millions and millions of people around the world.
