There are less than eight weeks remaining in this Championship season with the international break the final stop-off before the final run-in to decide promotion in the highest-quality second tier for decades
In all but three of the past 10 years of the Championship, Southampton’s 73 points would have them in the top two at this stage of the season. If they were to win their game in hand, their 76 points after 37 games would put them in the top two in nine of the past 10 years.
The average overall position of United’s remaining opposition is 12th, while their average position in the shorter-term, six-match form table is 14th. Hull City and Coventry City back-to-back across five days in April stands out as the sternest test before Southampton visit on the final day. West Bromwich Albion, fifth, visit on April 20, three days before Southampton, fourth, visit and then another four days later, Preston North End, ninth, host Enzo Maresca’s side. In the near future, Norwich City, third in the form table, will visit on April 1 and provide another banana skin for the current leaders.
Like Leeds, Coventry and Hull will also be played back to back in late April, but both will be away from home. If they are still chasing the play-offs, they will be almighty tests for Kieran McKenna’s side.
