VFX artists praise Jim Carrey's The Mask, explaining how the film created the spinning effect based on the Looney Tunes’ Tasmanian Devil.

Visual effects artists have broken down how Jim Carrey’s 1994 movie The Mask was able to create the cartoonish spinning effect similar to the Looney Tunes’ Tasmanian Devil. Loosely based on the comic book series created by Doug Mahnke and John Arcudi, The Mask saw Carrey assume the role of hapless bank clerk Stanley Ipkiss who finds a magical mask that gifts him with the ability to animate himself and his surroundings.

Why Jim Carrey’s Performance Was The Mask’s Real Best Special Effect Created at a time when computer generated special effects were only just starting to become a commonplace tool, the VFX effects work featured in The Mask remains impressive even by modern standards.

Carrey was still relatively unknown at the time that The Mask was originally being cast, but it was the comedian’s unique physical abilities that put him ahead of more established Hollywood funny men such as Rick Moranis, Martin Short, and Robin Williams. Even heavily layered with facial prosthetics, Carrey was able to bring his trademark exaggerated expressions to the fore.

Carrey’s skills were not lost on director Chuck Russell, who once revealed that “the guys at ILM said they figured I saved about a million bucks once I got Jim.” Indeed, Carrey’s involvement was so integral to the success of The Mask, that when 2005’s sequel Son of the Mask was made without him, it would eventually go on to be named as one of the worst films ever made. Thankfully, nearly 30 years later, The Mask still holds up thanks to the special abilities of its talented leading man.
