Andrew Wight is an Australian science journalist based in Cali, Colombia. He’s covered science and STEM in the Global South since 2019, with his work also appearing in Science, Nature and New Scientist among others. He’s covered everything from the sex lives of coral in Colombia to the plant that’s raw material for cocaine.

A team of scientists have discovered that the Salar de Atacama in Chile — which contains a large part of the world's reserves of lithium — is slowly sinking.salt flats in northern Chile , lithium-rich brine from underground is pumped to evaporation pools, where 90% of the water is lost to the atmosphere.

Meet The World’s Oldest Fish—Presumed Extinct For 60 Million Years, Then Rediscovered In A Small Fishing TownCastillo explained that by processing radar images obtained via InSAR, the researchers showed that the surface of the salt flat experiences soil subsidence in the area from which brine is pumped.

"I decided to study geology for all that it entails: understanding the dynamics of the subsoil across space and time," he says, adding that while studying, he realized that geologists can answer current questions of broad interest, such as, where the next earthquake will be, how much copper a rock have and how much water does humanity have available.

"It shows the level of scientific research that can be done, and how capable we are as a Latin American society," he says adding that part of the data gathered in the project came from an Argentine satellite, and the"natural laboratory" of the Atacama desert.
