presenter Melissa Porter explains her fears around money and how she hopes her new book will help people escape toxic relationshipsBorn in Manchester in 1972, Melissa Porter worked as a marketing manager for M&S then a brand manager for Playtex before getting her big break in TV in 2002. By 2007 she was presentingwhile renovating luxury properties.
I was taught that women are not the ones that should be earning the big money, so when I started a TV career, my parents were like, ‘what are you doing? You’re supposed to be getting married.’ What I’ve learned with age and wisdom is that making money is my thing. I’m a magnet for money. I can manifest it. But what I wasn’t taught was how to on hold money – how to be mindful about how you invest your money, spend your money, allocate your money.
Melissa says she lost all her money in 2009 when a hands-off property deal in Shoreditch backfired My worst investment is in people. If you are part of my inner circle, you will get anything from me but just because I have, does not mean that I will give. When I was on TV, I had big money so people assumed I was always okay, and I’ve always had people around me, family particularly, who want to eat at my table, who I have done things financially for out of duty.
My main goal is to set up a foundation helping men and women come out of toxic relationships and I hope my book does well too. I don’t know if I’ll make any cash from it but I’m hoping it helps a few people at least.
