'After going through dozens of responses, one thing stood out: sexual assault victims were not receiving the legal justice they deserved.'

. Sexual assault is something we cannot ignore the way we might ignore a notification on our iPhones.

I have met many women who are sexual assault victims, and reading through Facebook groups as they discuss their terrible experiences makes me want to pull my hair out in frustration. This is a real problem that needs more effort than just an Instagram post proclaiming "sexual assault is bad." This is a problem that needs action.

Two years ago, I finally found a way to act on my frustration, during my sophomore year of high school. As someone who was raised by an amazing single mother, I saw how strong women can be, and she served as a role model who inspired me to help other women in my community. With my mom's guidance, as a sixth grader I learned how to code, which gave me a tool to impact people using technology.

When I was accepted as a fellow, I needed to find a group of women to help me address sexual assault through technology. I posted in the SHE++ Facebook group, asking other girls if they wanted to create an app with me, and I was overwhelmed by the responses I received. So many girls wanted to work with me, which proved to me that women are just as capable and driven as men to revolutionize society with technology.

Eventually, I created a group with four other girls, and together, we surveyed other women in our community to learn more about the issues they faced. After going through dozens of responses, one thing stood out: Sexual assault victims were not receiving the legal justice they deserved. So we worked to create an app to help women get the evidence they need to take legal action should they be assaulted. After two months of work, we designed the prototype for our app, SafetyPin.
