We asked people steeped in climate and renewable-energy issues how they reduced their personal carbon footprints. Here’s what they said.

We asked people steeped in climate and renewable-energy issues how they reduced their personal carbon footprintsIf anybody should know about how people can cut their carbon footprint, it’s the scientists, professors and other energy experts who are constantly thinking about the energy issues.Of course, no one person can make a dent in what many agree is an enormous and complicated problem.

This is exactly how I approach reducing my carbon diet. I’m trying to reduce emissions compared with last year, not strive for zero. For example, after seeing its shocking statistics on carbon emissions, I am buying steak only for special occasions. And finally, I am reasonable with my thermostat settings. In the summer, 77 degrees is cold enough if I’m wearing shorts and a T-shirt. And 68 degrees in the winter is very comfortable with a sweater.

We have been driving an EV since 2018, and are eager to buy a second one as more SUV and truck models become available. We absolutely love the experience of driving an EV. I didn’t realize how much I hated going to the gas station until I no longer had to go anymore. Being able to “fill up” in my garage is incredibly easy, and we have enjoyed taking the car on many trips up and down the East Coast without any problems finding a charging station when we needed one.

Back in the U.S., I bought a home 2 miles from my job. That minimized my commute, and it kept my fuel consumption low. But the most important thing we did to reduce energy use was completing a deep-energy retrofit on our 1928 home in 2015, reducing our energy use with extra insulation, high-performance windows, LED lighting and high-efficiency appliances. We cut air leakage 90%; heat-recovery ventilation efficiently provides continuous fresh air. We ripped out the gas-heating system, and use air-source heat pumps to supply heat, air conditioning and hot water. It’s all powered by rooftop solar.
