Composer Germaine Franco was committed to bringing authentic Colombian music into ‘Encanto’—even if it meant breaking the traditional sound of Disney magic.

–style sound of Disney magic, and what it means to be a female composer working hard to hold the door open so that more women can follow in her footsteps.was really a turning point for you as a solo composer. Does it feel that way to you as well?Yes, because I had been working on a lot of projects on my own, but they were independent and not these big studio films.

In this instance they were very much immersed in finishing the animation, so I spent months working on my own, just doing score suites and melodic ideas. Then we might have one meeting a month for the first couple of months, just for me to try out textures and instruments and what did they respond to. Then once we got the vaccines, we were able to actually meet about every other week, where I would be presenting my ideas in a theater. That was the back and forth.

I’ve just been doing it a really long time. The pandemic didn’t really affect me that much in that sense of work. I’m used to working on my own a lot, so that part I’m okay with. I do enjoy it when we’re all on the scoring stage with the orchestra, the rhythm section, we all come together. It’s sort of like having a reading of your work. You’ve got it in your mind, you know what you want, and then someone says it in a different way and interprets it their way. That to me is the beauty of it.
