Experts says recruiting, retaining women candidates must be ongoing effort

VICTORIA —In the Northwest Territories, more than half of the members of the legislative assembly are women. This didn’t happen by fluke; in both regions, efforts to boost the number of women elected were deliberate, and recruiting initiatives continue — something experts say is key to ensuring diversity among politicians at all levels.

NWT, B.C., Yukon and Quebec have the highest proportion of women in their provincial legislatures, all with 42 per cent or more. In Ontario,, a slight drop from the record-breaking 39.5 in the 2018 election — but just 23 of the governing Progressive Conservatives’ 83 members are women, or about 27 per cent.

Smaller provinces have only 25 to 35 per cent women in provincially and/or federally elected positions, “so there’s some sort of systemic issue happening. I don’t know exactly what it is but it’s real and it seems to be ongoing. We worry about it.” “It doesn’t matter if it’s Green, NDP, Liberals or PCs. I really encourage women to go out there and put their name forward and be part of the process.”

In the last assembly, Cochrane and Julie Green were the only two women. When they were told only one of them would be in cabinet, each put up their hand.
