Opinion: After two years of study during a pandemic, Arizona Town Hall asked hundreds what could create more vibrant communities. Here's what we found.
We live different lives. The Arizona Town Hall brought us together.
Like hundreds of Arizonans, we were invited to imagine a better Arizona for all. And after two years of deep study about how to create vibrant communities, we have the results. Using online platforms during the pandemic brought more discussion. We also had more time to find consensus over and make connections between the big issues – from social justice to transportation options, economic opportunities to affordable housing quality.
We dreamed what could be possible using meaningful civil discourse. We collectively reimagined what we might do together to make Arizona a healthier, more equitable place.Pandemic made inequities more visibleMany essential workers were people of color or low-income earners who did not have the luxury of isolating at home, and thus faced the dilemma of unemployment, poverty or possibly fatal illness.
Many in rural and low-income communities lacked access to high-speed internet, and thus could not work or attend school remotely.When many public schools closed, children’s learning and socialization were interrupted. A lack of access to quality child care forced many parents to leave the workforce and stay home to care for their children, a burden that disproportionately fell on low-income women.“COVID-19 has resulted in those who were already at risk being at even greater risk now.
