Dozens of people are involved in making sure all the zoo residents are fed daily at the Cleveland Zoo. The diets of the animals are carefully controlled and monitored to keep the animals as healthy as possible. Willy, the bull elephant, weighs over 7 tons and needs to eat about 5% of its body weight a day. Meanwhile, the zoo’s Burmese python only eats two whole rabbits per month due to how long its digestion cycle takes to break down the food. The exception is koala browse, commonly known as eucalyptus. Koalas are the only animals at the zoo that eat the plant, and the three at the zoo can eat up to 300 pounds a week. The zoo spends around $67,900 on koala browse each year, the fourth-highest of any product.
