We've heard so much about Utah's awesome snowpack this season, but how exactly is it measured?
ALTA, Utah — Utah’s snowpack is approaching record territory as the latest number show the water currently in the state's snowpack is higher than it has ever been at this point in March since the collection of data began in the late 1970’s.“In general, if we have 20 inches of precipitation in a snowpack, that's a good year,” said Troy Brosten, a hydrologist with the Natural Resources Conservation Service. “This right here is double what we would consider as good.
They regularly hike and snowshoe to every SNOTEL site to manually measure the snowpack to verify the accuracy of the automated readings.“They start looking at that data and then start planning out summer allotments of the water,” Brosten said. “They want to know how much is going to come into the reservoirs.”
