Representatives from Walt Disney World and Disneyland, Universal Studios Hollywood and Orlando and elsewhere tell Yahoo Entertainment that they are, of course, watching the situation closely.
What exactly does spring break — the time of year when families, students and tourists of all ages traditionally pour into American amusement parks — look like in the age of the coronavirus outbreak?As of Wednesday, at least 1,000 cases of the illness in the United States had been identified, according to Johns Hopkins University. Abroad, the situation is worse in countries such as Italy and China, leading the World Health Organization to officially declare a global pandemic.
“We are carefully monitoring the evolving coronavirus situation and are in regular contact with health agencies for information and guidance. Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort are open and welcoming guests and we continue to implement preventive measures in line with the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , as well as state and local health agencies.
“The health and safety of our guests and team members is our top priority. We are in frequent contact with health officials, our own health experts and others in our industry and we are closely monitoring the situation. We are communicating with our team members and reinforcing our best-practice health and hygiene procedures. We are also educating them on basic preventive measures. In addition, we are reviewing and enhancing our already aggressive cleaning protocols.
“As a company we are collaborating with public health officials and local, state and federal authorities. We have also convened a task force which is directing our coronavirus preparedness and response activities. We will continue to prioritize the well-being of our guests and Ambassadors as well as animals in our care.”A spokeswoman for the Tampa, Fla., location of the amusement park says officials are paying close attention to what’s going on with the coronavirus.
