If Dems want to win in November, activists who are young and old will need to get out the vote among their peer groups. Here's how a college town in North Carolina experiments with a simple way to get young and old activists working together:

, a two-way race between Biden and Sanders, 77 percent of under-30 voters chose Sanders and 73 percent of over-65 voters chose Biden.

Even though precinct and county party committees often do little, Kromer realized that an official party committee could provide a permanent structure to engage in politics between election cycles. Since there was no formal Democratic committee in his college town, he created one and became its chair in 2017. Kromer recruited some of his fellow students, supportive professors and dozens, then hundreds, of community members to join him, including many retirees.

The answer is so simple. Students don’t want merely to be grunt workers. They want to have a stake, a voice in leadership. Yes, they need training and mentors, but they can quickly sniff out when they are being used. So Kromer set the rules differently: Students have a seat at the leadership table. They get to work on issues they care about.

Unlike college Democratic and Republican clubs elsewhere, the Davidson group doesn’t merely host student events or talk about structural, revolutionary change. Rather, it is guided by a service mission with a political twist. The students serve their community by working at the intersection of issues they care about and politics . They see the connection between these big national priorities and the concrete solutions to those issues on the ground.
