As the coronavirus spreads across the globe, it is becoming a major disrupter to the sports world
in the U.S. was announced in Washington State – a man in his 50s that had underlying health conditions. To add, two people at a LifeCare nursing facility in Kirkland, Washington have been reported to have contracted the virus. There is fear that the entire nursing facility could be exposed as 50 residents and staff are showing signs of respiratory signs that could be the signs of a full-blown outbreak.
“We’re going to be increasingly recommending that people try and avoid crowds and close contact with other people,” said Dr. Jeff Duchin, health officer for Public Health Seattle & King County. “We may get to a point where we want to recommend canceling large public gatherings — social events, sporting events, entertainment — until we get over a hump of what might be a large outbreak.”
Concerns around the spread of the virus have made it to the athletes, as well. CJ McCollum of the Portland Trail Blazers took to Twitter to let fans know that he’s avoiding signing autographs for the time being: The topic of the novel coronavirus has made its way into the halls of Major League Baseball, who is now seeing Spring Training games and will soon see larger crowds as the regular season gets underway at the end of the March. The league is actively monitoring the situation, is in contact with the Center for Disease Control as well as Health and Human Services .
