Thomson: How Alberta Premier Danielle Smith outmaneuvered Justin Trudeau and Rachel Notley on the ‘just transition’ controversy via torontostar
If you’ve ever wondered whether politics does indeed make for unlikely bedfellows, just take a peek under the covers in Alberta.
Never mind that the strategy has a benign goal of helping energy workers, among others, transition to lower-carbon jobs if they’re affected by the global move toward greener energy, Smith is cynically misrepresenting the strategy to accuse Trudeau of trying to kill 2.7 million jobs across the country, and 187,000 in Alberta’s energy sector alone.
However, Smith continues to describe the publicly available briefing notes as a “leaked memo” that reveals a secret agenda to “eliminate entire sectors of our economy” that are “deemed too dirty by Ottawa elites.” Notley had indeed been noticeably quiet on the just transition front because the issue had her in a bind. As a firm proponent of climate-change action, Notley understands the reality of what’s ahead for Alberta’s economy. But as a politician preparing for a general election in energy-obsessed Alberta, Notley couldn’t dare be seen as defending either of the JTs: the Just Transition or Justin Trudeau.
But Smith scored something of a tactical victory this week by forcing Notley’s hand on an issue that could prove problematic for the NDP leader whose supporters include those who welcome the federal strategy and will be disappointed by Notley’s Smith-like stance.
