A last-minute meeting between the ANC provincial, regional leadership and their secretary-general, Fikile Mbalula, on Thursday evening paved the way for Al Jama-ah councillor Kabelo Gwamanda to be elected as the new mayor in the city of Johannesburg

In the meeting, the two regional factions who wanted different mayoral candidates were reined in. One faction wanted former mayor Dada Morero to be the candidate, another faction wanted Gwamanda. He said they decided to endorse Gwamanda as a matter of principle, adding it was a sensible thing that they forwarded his name to replace his colleague, Thapelo Amad.
“We are not changing the party but the individual,” said Lesufi, responding to a question whether Speaker Colleen Makhubele was one of the names forwarded by their alliance to stand for mayoral position Lesufi said it was a principled position that they presented to the steering committee of the GLU and it was accepted.
The DA endorsed former mayor Mpho Phalatse, who received 68 votes, while ActionSA decided to endorse its provincial chairperson Funzi Ngobeni. Ngobeni got 59 votes.DA provincial leader Solly Msimanga said when Phalatse was removed in January, ActionSA was at the forefront to ensure that she returned to the position. They have been saying that she did nothing wrong. But our surprise is that they chose to field their own person now and we wonder what happened.
