My Chemical Romance bizarrely predicted Zack Snyder's 2009 film Watchmen. Based on the eponymous graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, Watchmen was Snyder's first foray into superhero movies. Taking place in 1985, Watchmen focuses on a world in which superheroes have been largely outlawed, save for the super powered Dr. Manhattan . Following the murder of the Comedian , outlaw hero Rorschach investigates the case as more heroes begin to inch out of retirement.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Before Watchmen helped superhero movies grow up, it went through a long and arduous development process, with many actors and directors coming and going before Snyder came aboard. While this earned Watchmen the reputation of being "unfilmable" for a long time, My Chemical Romance's song "Ghost of You" adds another layer of irony to that. Especially considering the band's eventual involvement with Watchmen as a movie.
For Watchmen, My Chemical Romance recorded a cover of Bob Dylan's 1965 song "Desolation Row", with the song playing over the movie's end credits. The lyrics of Bob Dylan would come to bookend Watchmen, with Dylan's "The Times Are A-Changin'" playing over the movie's opening credits. However, My Chemical Romance's cover of "Desolation Row" carries an added meaning within the context of the film.
The Real Meaning Behind Watchmen's "Desolation Row" Explained In many ways, "Desolation Row" serves the same function as "The Times Are A-Changin'", with the two songs at once lamenting and satirizing the state of the world through their lyrics.
Sadly, Dr. Manhattan has to kill Rorschach in order to keep the secret, but Rorschach may have gotten the last laugh with his journal finding its way to a tabloid journalist, carrying with it the truth about everything. Watchmen does not overtly reveal whether Rorschach's journal undoes the world peace that was achieved through the lie about Dr. Manhattan.
