Campbell made no apparent reaction as the verdict in the 174th District Court was read. He handed his younger brother a handful of his belongings and started penning a note. The punishment phase came quickly with testimony from Campbell’s brother and ex-wife defending his character.The ex-wife told the court that Campbell is a good father and once released, would be welcomed into the lives of their two children, one of whom is special needs.
About 24 hours earlier, Campbell encountered Haynie and called 911 to ask for an officer’s assistance. Police did not collect audio from the prior 911 call, surveillance footage or body-worn camera footage from that dispatched officer that may have explained why both men acted the way they did. An offense report was not produced from that prior incident.
“I was embarrassed because I let my fear dictate what I was going to do," Campbell testified, going on to express remorse for the shooting."I ended a human life — how could I not regret that?" The security guard contends Haynie came at him aggressively — but the investigator, after watching the video, did not believe that was the case.
