For 20 years, transportation officials have planned in some form to modernize and expand the freeway and other transportation options around it. Extending Metropolitan Transit Authority's Red Line north to Loop 610, which opened in 2013, and plans to bring the Hardy Toll Road to downtown Houston, which is in the planning stages, are both linked to the two-decade discussion of I-45.
Popular trails along White Oak Bayou would be radically different, as would a few local parks, although some of the agreements and TxDOT's original plans provided for new park and trail space while also adding bike lanes and wider sidewalks to many streets crossing the freeway and along the frontage roads.
"We know from experience that TxDOT does not operate in good faith," the group said."They continue to manipulate data and use disproven population and traffic models, they strong-armed the city with the Lofts at the Ballpark demolition, and they manufactured public consent with their exclusionary survey. To expect new outcomes from their current methods is waiting for harm to occur again. Harm monitored is still harm done.
TxDOT also has a lot of details to work out, ranging from how Metro's Red Line and Wheeler Transit Center will work above a buried I-69 to final plans for structural caps near the George R. Brown Convention CenterThat's in addition to the normal final designs, and redesigns that TxDOT has agreed to as part of the federal deal.
