Meet the Houston restaurateurs behind Tim Hortons' first Texas location

CSM plans to open 30 Houston Tim Hortons, including 10 within the next three years. Texas’s first Tim Hortons is slated to open this summer. Tim Hortons, whose namesake founded the chain with a single donut shop in 1964 in Hamilton, Ontario. Horton grew the chain with partner Ron Joyce to 40 stores before dying in a 1974 car accident .
Ali Lakhany worked briefly at Yahoo! before graduating from the University of Houston in 2007 but gravitated back to the restaurant business. When his father died in 2009. the family ran three restaurants. But the Ali and Emad, as the company’s CEO and chief development officer, respectively, grew that to total to about 20 locations the time CSM and Tim Hortons began preliminary discussions about a franchising partnership about five years ago.
Same stores sales at Tim Hortons rose 11 percent, outperforming other fast-food brands. Burger King’s same-store sales rose 9 percent last year while Popeyes same-store sales were flat. That said, CSM is counting on a rising-tide effect. U.S. quick-service-restaurant sales are estimated to reach $317.5 billion in 2022, up 46 percent from a decade earlier, according to Los Angeles-based market-research firm IBISWorld. By comparison, U.S. single-location full-service restaurant sales are projected to reach $206.7 billion this year, up 39 percent from a decade earlier.
