. The church found prosperity despite facing adversity when a fire totally destroyed its sanctuary on July 4, 1968."Only a Holy Bible was found in the ruins," the church's website states.
Riceville has steadily grown through the years, acquiring 10 acres of land on South Gessner for the construction of a new church building. Church leaders purchased an additional 17 acres in Sept. 1994 and constructed a 22,000-square-foot building in Dec. 2002. Church leaders emphasized in September's report that showcasing Black history on public lands would not only serve as a"salve for trauma" but would help counter the organized resistance to Black history.
Lifting up Black stories on land, leaders argue, is not merely an exercise in filing historical gaps. It's a methodology for countering racism. "Even though Black leaders are seldom if ever consulted regarding local, state or national parks and public lands, Black communities still value public lands not only for their health and recreation benefits but for their value for telling Black history," said Rev. Michael McClain with NPRE in a release."This isn't just Black history, it is everyone's history.
