HGO's opera is steeped in family, and all the sacrifices and celebrations that come with it.
“I think the positive spirit in the piece also resonates [with the audience], and it did for us as well,” says Beth Krynicki, who jumped from assistant director of the 2019 production to director in Arizona and this restaging, onstage Dec. 8-18 at the Wortham Center’s Cullen Theater.
Set in the early '60s, “Milagro” follows two migrant workers, Laurentino and Chucho, on a surprise Christmastime visit to their tiny home village in the southwestern Mexican state of Michoácan. The men have been working in the U.S. under the bracero program, which granted temporary visas to agricultural laborers. Upon returning, however, they begin to realize the negative effects their absence has had on the loved ones they left behind.
Awaiting Laurentino’s return, his wife Renata has thrown herself into her role as director of the annual pastorela, an imaginative and colorful retelling of the nativity story. Duarte originated the role in “Cruzar la Cara de la Luna,” Foglia and Javier’s father Jose “Pepe” Martínez’s 2010 opera that picks up Renata’s story a few generations down the road, by which point her family is fully, if uneasily, established on both sides of the border.
“There are all of those big moments that tie them together and that as they grew up and became adults and became a couple and got married, a lot of that became part of the past and was almost forgotten,” Duarte says. “So there’s a moment for Renata where she starts remembering those things, and that even makes her desires to keep her family together even stronger.”
