Houston comedian Mo Amer gets his own Netflix series
Houston comedian Mo Amer is getting his own scripted TV series.
Netflix has announced that the semi-biographical, eight-episode “Mo,” starring Amer as a Palestinian refugee whose family flees to Houston, will begin streaming Aug. 24. The half-hour series is produced by fellow comedian Ramy Yousseff who is the star of the Hulu series “Ramy” which also features Amer as one of his friends.
Co-starring with Amer in “Mo” is Houston rapper/musician Tobe Nwigwe as his best friend and Teresa Ruiz as his girlfriend., “Amer plays Mo Najjar, a man who’s learning to adapt to his new world as he embarks on the path to US citizenship. He’s trying to reconcile his two cultures and three languages, all while navigating the complicated and seemingly never-ending immigration process. He loves his family and tries to provide for them — even if they don’t like how he does it.
But “Mo” won’t be the comedian’s only major project this year. He also stars with Dwayne Johnson in the upcoming DC film “Black Adam” and appears with Emma Stone and Willem Dafoe in “Poor Things,” directed by Yorgos Lanthimos . Both are expected to be released later this year. Previously, Amer has been featured on two stand-up specials “Mo Amer: Mohammed in Texas” and “Mo Amer: The Vagabond.”
