A volunteer for a Houston animal shelter\u00a0was recently fired for violating the shelter's code of conduct after remarks made in a viral TikTok

The city updated its animal code Wednesday, which requires all dog and cat owners to microchip their animals and will prohibit pet stores from sourcing from puppy mill breeders.

While confronting the man who was recording her, the woman informed him he was illegally selling puppies and she called the police.After the man said he wasn't leaving, the woman asks if he was a legal resident of the country. She tells him to"go back to your own country" and later to"go back to Mexico."After the video started circulating on other social media sites, the woman was identified as April Bowerman.

According to BARC Animal Shelter & Adoptions, Bowerman was a volunteer and foster with the organization for several years until they were made aware of the video on June 10. "In the video, Mrs. Bowerman was seen using language not in line with BARC or the City of Houston's expectations of volunteers and fosters," BARC's Director of Communications Cory Stottlemyer said in a statement."After being made aware of the video, BARC management sent Mrs. Bowerman a suspension notice and directed her to return the foster pet she had in her possession, a cat named Pinta.

Stottlemyer said Bowerman returned her cat the next day and BARC management followed up with a formal letter permanently removing her from the volunteer and foster programs on June 12.handbooks, BARC's code of conduct applies to any member of BARC in their online and written interactions, as well as personal interactions with staff, other fosters or members of the public.
