With water bills going up, there's a wide variety of ways to cut down costs

In England and Wales, bills will rise by 6.2 per cent on average, while Scotland will see an even steeper rise of 8.8 per cent, according to Water UK and Scottish Water. It means the average water and sewerage bill in England and Wales will stand at around £473 - up by £27.

Experts say there are a number of ways you could slash your bill, including by discussing your situation with your supplier or by making changes to your daily habits. For example cutting your shower time could see savings of around £100 a year.Take shorter showers WaterWise says that showers use up the most water in UK homes, at about 34 per cent. So, taking shorter showers can be a good way to reduce your water bill when costs are going up.

In addition, you could switch your showerhead to a low-flow version to conserve even more water. Traditional showerheads use around eight to ten litres per minute in the UK, whereas low-flow showerheads use approximately four to six, amounting to huge savings over time. Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth If you brush your teeth twice daily for two minutes, you could save around 8,544 litres of water per year just by turning off the water while brushing your teeth. With a meter installed, you'd knock off around £16 from your annual water bill or £50 for a family of four.

Choose water-saving appliances Next time you need a new washing machine, dishwasher or loo, try to pick ones that use less water. They're made specially to be better than the old types.
