House of PainT is billing this year’s edition of the festival a “reunion” that will bring the various elements of hip hop culture in Ottawa together again…
The reunion theme is reflected in the program, which features return appearances by headliners who have thrilled HOP audiences in the past, such as Haviah Mighty, the Toronto-based rapper who made history this year when she became the first woman to earn the Juno Award for best rap album, and francophone hip-hop legend D-track. Mischa is the word-slinging dynamo responsible for Alpha Barbie, a catchy, beat-heavy track that came out in 2020 and made a splash with its feminist swagger. There’s been a string of singles since then, including One Up, G2G and the latest, 999, generating a momentum that’s starting to propel her career. So far this year, she won a Capital Music Award for best music video and has already performed at RBC Ottawa Bluesfest, the Cranium Arts Project and Montreal’s Metro Metro festival.
“I always wrote all of my feelings as an outlet,” Mischa said in an interview, “then slowly over the years, I started turning those thoughts and emotions into rhyme but it wasn’t until I was 25 when I said, ‘Hey, you know what? I’m going to try to make a song.’ I had no idea how to structure a song but I just wanted to give it a go.”Article content
Mischa also makes use of the resources offered through the Ottawa Music Industry Coalition , including networking events, information sessions and panel discussions that give her the know-how to manage her own career as an independent artist.
