They have accused campaigners of 'misinformation'
The operators of a hotel in West Northamptonshire have hit back at the Home Office's decision to overturn its plans to house up to 400 asylum seekers there. The plans to use Highgate House hotel in Creaton as contingency accommodation would have seen the population of the village almost double and was fiercely campaigned against by residents.
They state the presentation is "a fact-based report to ensure the correction of the misinformation that has fuelled the recent campaign" and is "providing supporting evidence" that Highgate House is suitable as contingency accommodation. The report then proceeds to address each point of concern addressed by campaigners.
They also argue that the asylum seekers "will not double the population of the community" if residents in a 3,5, and 10km radius are taken into account. They highlight the fact that the population within a 10km radius, which includes Northampton, stands at 369,107. The report points to Singature's Dunchurch Park Hotel in Warwickshire, which has already become contingency accommodation. It claims "we have had no issues of crime, or nuisance to local residents, which can be evidenced by Warwickshire Police" and that its guests have been volunteering with village organisations, maintaining the village green space, and litter picking.
Signature argue they "have found the area to be well supported" in terms of local GP services and list 13 medical providers including Northampton General Hospital and Kettering General Hospital. They argue this shows "the campaign did not represent a true reflection of the situation." The report says children are awaiting allocation will have on-site educational resources, and "qualified ESOL teachers and nursery staff to ensure children and adults receive the best start prior to their educational placement."
