What makes a fragrance campaign go viral? In this case, it came down to just three things: a horse, a beach, and a shirtless Adam Driver.
The horse trainer on this shoot was the same person that I worked with before on this movie called. I’d done some things before with horses, and I’ve ridden, off and on, when I was a kid. Not where I’d say I’m Errol Flynn, but I knew to stay out of their way. I had a couple scares on a horse so I knew if they were running at me to run in the opposite direction.
You’ve famously gone the extra mile to meet your roles’ physical demands. How did you prepare for this spot? Yeah—actors talking about training I think is one of the most boring things in the world, so I’ll try to condense it as much as possible: I didn’t approach it any differently than a regular film role, even though it was a commercial. When we got to shoot it, I’m so glad I did what I did because I think I underestimated how physical it was going to be.
I don’t know that someone would look at me and immediately read that fashion is…I’ll just abandon that sentence. I tried to find a joke in there that just didn’t work.Do I like to get dressed up? Yeah, as, like, a pirate? [] No—totally, totally! I appreciate things that are made with specificity. It’s hard not to like those things. And things that are made with quality are nice.
I recently spoke to someone who lost their sense of smell. And they asked me to describe my perfume, and I didn’t have the language to capture it accurately. Do you feel like you now possess the vocabulary to talk about scent in a more sophisticated way?] I can do it in layman’s terms. I, of course, like everybody, have attached memory to fragrance. And then I clock it and move on with my life; it’s not something that I analyze. Personally, I have strong memories of burnt firewood.
