Hopes that search for Ian Brady victim on Saddleworth Moor won’t prove to be another false daw Claims of a skull being found have brought back painful memories of Ian Brady and his refusal to give Keith Bennett’s family closure
police carrying shovels towards a forensics tent on Saddleworth MoorFor nearly 60 years, there has been a collective hope that one day Keith Bennett would be found.
Year after year, Keith’s mother, Winnie Johnson, would take part in appeals and speak to reporters about the latest theories or possible discoveries. She just wanted her boy to come home. Police were further frustrated by their inability to access two locked briefcases belonging to Brady after his death when his lawyer refused permission on legal grounds. It had been hoped a change in the law would force a change but there has been little progress.
While Mr Edwards is convinced this is a major breakthrough, it has to be borne in mind that there have been several false dawns in the search for Keith over the decades.
