Another war of words has broken out between teaching unions and the Education Secretary, as hopes deteriorate of a breakthrough in an ongoing pay dispute ahead of strikes next week

“We want to resolve this dispute in the interests of teachers and children’s education. Such a resolution will not come, however, without goodwill on both sides. Inaccurate claims by the Department for Education do nothing to achieve this aim.”

The current offer, which drops to 3 per cent for experienced teachers, is well below unions’ demands of a 12 per cent pay rise for their members. It means teacher strikes are likely to go ahead as planned next week, with tens of thousands of teachers set to walk out across most of England and Wales on three separate dates.
