It was badly damaged in a fire and is a target for vandals
Enthusiasm has been expressed that plans for a historic factory which has become a 'bomb site' could bring life to a 'boring street'. New plans have been submitted for the vacant Guy Birkin mills in New Basford, with a partial demolition proposed and the construction and conversion of buildings to provide more flats on the site.
"Housing is always good, I myself have just moved here. But it could have been something a bit more fun - it would make a very good gallery, museum or gig venue as it's a big space. "It takes up a lot of space here so it needs to be put to good use. If the people could start work on it that would be great, the fences around it are falling apart.New Basford was a centre for the thriving lace manufacturing industry in the second half of the 19th century with the Enclosure Act of 1845 and the advent of steam power. The buildings on the Maville Works are some of the only physical signs of this left in the New Basford area.
Speaking previously about the plans to convert the buildings, Hilary Silvester, executive chair of the Civic Society, added: "The area is a symbol of what used to be the historic industry at the heart of Nottingham.
