For generations, North Manchester General Hospital has been the scene of some of life's happiest and saddest moments. Yet years of underinvestment have seen its Victoria-era estate fall into a tired, dilapidated state.
For those who live on the streets surrounding NMGH, the prospect of a new hospital is a welcome prospect. "It's a big journey," the former newsagent said. "If they had more facilities here, it would be a good thing. "The worst health outcomes are in north Manchester," reads the foreword to plans for the new hospital, published in 2021. The then-CEO of Manchester University Foundation Trust which runs the hospital, Sir Mike Deegan, said: "Children born in north Manchester can expect to live five years less than those born in other parts of the country.
As part of the revamp, Mr Herbert said he hoped ongoing parking problems in the area will be resolved. Although parking restrictions are in place on streets around the hospital between 8am and 7pm on weekdays, he says they are often ignored. Those parking difficulties are something Samina Yasim knows all too well. Her home is a stone's throw from the hospital and she regularly wakes up to find her car blocked in by vehicles parked at the end of her driveway.
"We're happy about the hospital because it has been there a very long time but they need to do something about the parking." "Part of the hospital is almost 200 years old and it's a high cost to keep it running," said Diane McCartney, who worked at North Manchester General Hospital until 18 months ago.
