Rolen was not a mere product of his time. The numbers and the “eye test” say Rolen would have been excellent in any era. That, more than fame, is what makes a Hall of Famer now.
We tend to tell the story of baseball history without the Scott Rolens of the world. What his Hall of Fame election on the writers’ ballot this year tells us is, we don’t always get the story right the first time. Or the fifth time.
“There was never a point in my life when I thought I was going to be a Hall of Fame baseball player,” he said. There are many reasons why Rolen finally gained induction. One stands above the rest. To quote the man himself: “I took pride in defense and baserunning.” It’s not just that Rolen took pride in his defense, although that was a necessary ingredient for his success. Combine his effort with his natural ability, throw in some measures of fielding more reliable than errors, assists and putouts, and we can confidently say that the eight-time Gold Glove Award winner was one of the best ever at his position. In Rolen’s case, it helps that his defensive statisticsMaybe that’s the real definition of a Hall of Famer.
