Hoobiyee comes to Laxgalts’ap Village
, a replication of the original Eagle-Halibut Pole of Laay that currently stands at the Museum of Anthropology in Vancouver. The original is thought to have been carved by the Nisga’a Nass River carver Oye’a’ between 1860 and 1870.
“We are excited to have the opportunity to share Nisg̱a’a lip wilaa loom — Nisga’a way of life with the Scottish officials by bringing them to Hoobiyee celebrations in Laxgalts’ap,” said Dr. Amy Parent in a press release. “In years past in our history it was recognized that the oolichan was nicknamed Saviour Fish, because it saved a lot of people from starvation,” said Bright.
