LONDON — Unlike most 27-year-olds, Ms Chung Ching Kwong does not want any of her life shared on social media.

The Chinese national flag is seen in front of the financial district Central on Chinese National Day in Hong Kong, China on Oct 1, 2023.Both her and her loved ones' safety and freedom are at stake, said Ms Kwong, who left Hong Kong in 2020 to avoid arrest for her pro-democracy work after China imposed a sweeping national security law that year.

"It's quite exhausting... 'Okay what do they know? What should I avoid talking about on social media or online?' You become quite paranoid about what they can deduce from whatever you post online," said Ms Kwong, who now lives in Europe. A spokesperson for the Hong Kong police said that"in conducting any operation, police will act on the basis of actual circumstances and according to the law".Anna Kwok, 26, a Washington DC based Hong Kong activist, who has been designated by the Hong Kong police as a fugitive with a HK$1 million dollar bounty offered for her arrest, is photographed near the White House in Washington, DC, US, on July 10, 2023.

Since the bounty was announced, Ms Kwok — who is the youngest and only woman on the list — said online harassment, threats of sexual violence and hacking attempts have skyrocketed.Anna Kwok, 26, a Washington DC based Hong Kong activist, who has been designated by the Hong Kong police as a fugitive with a HK$1 million dollar bounty offered for her arrest, is photographed near the White House in Washington, DC, US, on July 10, 2023.
