A teen girl who was shot in mid-February has died from her injuries approximately two weeks after the incident, officials said.
CLEVELAND, Ohio - Investigators from the Cleveland Division of Police released new details in the shooting, which eventually turned deadly, of a 17-year-old girl.
Police said officers responded to a home on Buhrer Avenue on Sunday, Feb. 13 for reports of the shooting. At the scene, police found 17-year-old Destiny Woodall in the bedroom with a gunshot wound to her chest.While investigating the scene, police followed a trail of blood inside the house that led officers to a 21-year-old man in the basement suffering from a gunshot wound to his hand.
The man, identified by police as Iykle Burkes, told investigators that he shot himself in the hand and accidentally shot his girlfriend.Burkes was treated for his injuries, released from the hospital, arrested, and eventually indicted on Feb. 18 for the shooting.Approximately two weeks after the initial incident, the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office said that Woodall’s gunshot wound turned fatal. She was pronounced dead on Feb. 28.
Burkes was initially indicted on charges that included attempted murder and felonious assault, but the most recent entry from Cleveland Municipal Court records show he is now facing one count of murder since Woodall has died.The homicide unit with the Cleveland Division of Police is continuing to investigate the incident.
