It’s time to prioritize mental health over test scores and grades.

This was the farthest my school’s basketball team has gotten in a long time, and the hallways today were filled with hype.

The only thing that helped me feel a bit better the next day was hearing the stands were empty because others shared my predicament. Homework is a high schooler’s most threatening bully. Many teachers think homework has “little to no academic value” and is busywork. Students think it’s detrimental to mental and physical health.

Yes, homework may improve student achievement. High school students who spent 31 to 90 minutes a day on homework scored “40 points higher on the SAT-Mathematics subtest” than those who completed no homework. Personally, my math homework drills concepts into my mind, helping me score higher on tests … but 20 minutes would be enough, not three-plus hours. High test scores are a trade off for physical and mental health.

Less homework would allow students time to socialize with friends and family, or partake in extracurriculars and hobbies, like watching a school’s basketball game. It’s beneficial to have socialization skills with people, not textbooks.
