The introduction of several bills in the Texas Legislature aimed at facilitating more affordable housing comes as homes under $200,000 have gotten increasingly scarce.

The percentage of homes sold for less than $200,000 from 2011 to 2022 fell to 11 percent from 69.3 percent in the San Antonio area, to 5 percent from 66.4 percent in the Dallas area, to 0.5 percent from 53.6 percent in the Austin area, and to 10 percent from 64.8 percent in the Houston area.Meanwhile, the number of homes sold that were priced from $200,000 to $299,999, which had been steadily increasing in all four metros, started declining in 2020 as the pandemic took hold.
