Home-run derby champion Juan Soto is available and the Blue Jays have the prospects to get a deal done. But should they? Few people expected it could happen this soon.

One of the biggest names in baseball is up for grabs and his surprising availability promises to have ripple effects throughout Major League Baseball in advance of the Aug. 2 trade deadline.

Players this good rarely become available at such a young age, but after rebuffing a pair of contract extensions, including one reportedly worth $440 million over 15 years, Soto has been deemed expendable by the last-place Nationals, who won’t be contending any time soon. According to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman, the Nationals are expected to ask teams for their four top prospects, young big-league talent, and a willingness to absorb the approximately $60 million remaining on right-hander Patrick Corbin’s contract from 2023-24.

With Alejandro Kirk and Danny Jansen behind the plate, the idea of moving Moreno becomes more palpable. Martinez has no clear path to the big leagues with Bo Bichette and Santiago Espinal taking up the middle infield spots for the foreseeable future. Groshans is intriguing but has yet to develop much power. Tiedemann is the club’s fastest-rising pitcher but remains a risk, like any other young arm.

That means the Jays would be taking on upwards of $50 million for 2023, and perhaps $60-70 million in 2024. If they received assurances from Rogers Communications that payroll is going to substantially grow from its current $171 million, per Cot’s Baseball Contracts, that shouldn’t be an issue. If they haven’t, it’s a red flag.
