The DHA and other authorities are carrying out raids to find workers with illegal documents at restaurants and other businesses.
Under new minister Leon Schreiber, the Department of Home Affairs is clamping down on fraudulent documents in South Africa by raiding businesses to find illegal workers.
“It is only possible for someone to steal an ID number or engage in fraudulent activity like swopping out photos because the system has gaps that allow for human intervention,” said Schreiber. However, Smile ID believes the migration to smart ID cards could increase fraud until the green ID book is no longer considered valid.
When receiving their smart ID card, residents are supposed to hand their old identification documents to the DHA to be destroyed. However, this hasn’t always happened. She was paid R4,000 per fraudulent passport and arrested after she attempted to bribe a DHA Counter-Corruption Officer with R10,000.
