Some 357 pigs were culled on Monday after a hog raiser in Barangay Pasong Tamo Quezon City observed that several of his hogs showed signs of sickness and uneasiness.

Even without verifying if the pigs had contracted the African Swine Flu disease, Pasong Tamo Barangay Chairman Banjo Pilar said the hog raiser decided to kill the pigs and have them buried.

Banjo said the hog raiser called his office and informed him about the condition of several of his pigs. Earlier, Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte appealed to the city’s hog raisers to report to concerned authorities if their pigs are showing signs of sickness that might lead to the dreaded ASF disease.

She noted the city government will give financial assistance of P3,000 for every ASF stricken pig culled. This is aside from the P5,000 livelihood financial assistance the city government provides to each hog raiser with ASF infected hogs. The city government will provide livelihood assistance to the affected hog raisers who are given six months to cease operation.
