Cogta Minister responds to criticism that presidential izimbizo events are wasteful expenditure.
Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa has responded to public criticism that President Cyril Ramaphosa’s presidential izimbizo events were a fruitless and wasteful expenditure.
Hlabisa disclosed that the events cost taxpayers R44 million over four events held in an 18-month period. The aim of these events was to address public service delivery concerns and provide a platform for citizens to voice their complaints and suggestions. While answering questions from Democratic Alliance Member of Parliament Frederik Badenhorst, Hlabisa stated that the criticism was exaggerated.
“Here things are taken out of proportion and very unnecessary. This money was properly spent because it provides a rare opportunity for the president and all people at the government stage to come together to lead residents on a variety of issues and people to raise their concerns. But critics will always remain critics, they will never say positive things,” Hlabisa says.
