Ed Coleman is a regular columnist for the Valley Journal Advertiser. - File PhotoBefore the Acadians, there were no vast dikelands, no running dikes along our rivers, no Grand Dyke, no Upper Dyke and no great stretches of farmland along the Avon River and along the Cornwallis River.
Thanks to the Acadians who led the way, we have thousands of acres of dikeland in Nova Scotia — priceless land that’s been farmed for well over 200 years. And to set aside for a moment the historical aspects, another considerable feature of the dikelands is its recreational opportunities. The dikes have enriched the lives of countless people who trudge them with cameras, and the people who fish and hunt.
People who are neither hunters nor anglers enjoy the diverse flora and fauna of the dikelands. Also, to use an old cliché, you are literally walking in history when you stroll on the dikes. For example, one of my walks on the Canard dikes takes me past the site of an Acadian windmill, and another near the earliest Acadian efforts to dike a Canard feeder stream.
Kel Hancock, with his numerous Pisiquid posts on Facebook, writes that along the Avon, “old ruins of cellar walls and various other indications of their homes… may be seen at the present time.”
