The Eleanor Rainey Institute building opened its doors to help immigrants in the Hough neighborhood in 1904.CLEVELAND, Ohio - A local organization is not only giving a historic building on Cleveland’s East Side some much needed tender love and care, but it also in the process of creating a co-working space designed to give back to the community.

Willie Drake, director of Cliquepoint, said he came across the original Eleanor Rainey Institute building in the Hough neighborhood while searching for a bigger space for the organization. They purchased the 7,200 square-foot home in 2017 for about $30,000 from a sheriff’s auction after the home was repossessed.

Research showed that the building was built in the early 20th century, with the institute officially opening in 1904, thanks to wealthy philanthropist Eleanor B. Rainey. The goal was to help Eastern European immigrant children learn trades, home economics and more.a gymnasium on the second floor, and a custodian’s apartment on the third floor, according toThrough the 1950s, and in 1960s when the neighborhood became predominantly Black, they offered music lessons for children.

Though the organization relocated to a 27,500-square-foot arts center just down the street in 2011, the Rainey Memorial Institute lives on, and now, so will the crucial organizations original headquarters.
