The notorious Hills Bandit — “a one-man crime spree,” according to one judge — is out of prison in California and slated to spend the rest of his life behind bars in Nevada.Crime and Public Safety |Stephen Bartlett’s Nevada reckoning was nine years in coming: In 2014, he failed to show up to hear his sentence for a creative piece of larceny in Carson City.
At the 2015 sentencing, U.S. District Judge Dolly Gee said Bartlett had “one of the worst records I have ever seen in my years on the bench. … He has been virtually a one-man crime spree.” She noted 14 prior felony convictions, ranging from forgery to car theft. The man, still at the site when police arrived, took off in the truck. He led officers on a 90-minute chase, at one point driving in the wrong direction on Interstate 215. Finally, on Interstate 210 in Rialto, he lost control and hit a wall, and the truck flipped. He will serve his life term at the same Northern Nevada Correctional Center where he once claimed he worked.
