When the Texas Arts and Crafts Fair celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, Edith and John Maskey will be there, as they almost always are. Married 60 years, the Maskeys have been full-time artists since 1977.
Admission: $10 for both days, under 18 free“It’s taken us a few years, but I think we’re back about to the level where we were before the bankruptcy shut the fair,” Cash said.
Although the couple started painting with oils, at Warren’s suggestion they also tried watercolors. Edith’s first efforts weren’t promising. “It was a big leap,” John said. “We thought, let’s see if we can do something we love and actually make a living at it. And here we are, 45 years later.” They primarily paint scenes from Mexico and the Southwest: bucolic Mexican courtyards, sun-dappled town squares dominated by large churches and burbling fountains, flamenco dancers and elderly men riding donkeys. Their subjects wear traditional garb, the buildings are weathered stone with large wooden doors, and flowers cascade over walls.
