A pair of hikers stumbled on human remains in a remote location in Clear Creek Canyon Saturday afternoon, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.
The remains were discovered Saturday in the area of “Tunnel 2” on U.S. 6, which is west of Golden but east of the intersection with Colorado 119. The sheriff’s office said in a statement that the death did not happen recently, and that investigators were working to recover the remains Sunday.The remains were found too late in the day to mount a recovery operation Saturday, sheriff’s spokeswoman Jenny Fulton said Sunday.
“We don’t know the circumstances,” she said. “…We’re not treating it as a homicide at this point, it could be an accidental death, a suicide, a medical issue.” Highway 6 closed near tunnel 2 in Clear Creek Canyon for 30 – 60 mins for a recovery operation. Avoid the canyon between Hwy 58 in Golden and Hwy 119 on the west side of the canyon. Motorists already in the canyon will need to wait out the closure.
