Those crashes, plus three of the year’s double fatalities, all happened in the summer months. In fact, almost half the deaths – 34 of 69 – happened during the summer.“There’s more traffic on the road in the summer, and more tourism,” he said. “There are a number of factors, but that’s fairly consistent across most jurisdictions.

Highway 103 was the roadway with the most fatal crashes, with seven occurring between Halifax and Yarmouth. Two happened in each of Halifax, Lunenburg and Yarmouth counties, while one happened in Queens County,There were three fatal crashes on Highway 102, and two each on Highway 101, Highway 104 and Highway 12. Highway 101 at one time had up to 10 fatal crashes per year, but twinning between Lower Sackville and Windsor has helped reduce that.

For the third straight year, motorcycle fatalities were in double digits. Twelve people died in 11 crashes, up from 11 in 2021 and 10 in 2020.
